Crucible: Materials of Invention

Craft Victoria Gallery, Fitzroy. October 1994

Crucible explored the world of materials as a source or aid in the development of ideas. The exhibition looked at this relationship in both design and craft. Many of the problems, strategies and approaches are similar.

In the world of industrial design, extraordinary new materials are being created to solve design problems. Many exhibit new properties. The materials on exhibition showed what was happening at the boundaries of this exploration. These materials have been developed for hi-technology applications but promise new possibilities of expression for all practitioners.

In suggesting a continuum of creative practice, also on show were examples of material experimentation by crafts practitioners, looking at the importance of evolving a unique vocabulary of techniques to develop their work.

The craft practitioners were: Susan Cohn, Liz Williamson, Patrick Snelling, Owen Rye, Mark Edgoose, Michael Glover and Mark Pascal.
